16 Apr Board diversity
Boards perform better when they include the best people coming from a range of backgrounds and perspectives. The boardroom is where all the strategic decisions are made, risk overseen and governance applied. It is vital that an effective, well-governed and balanced board consists of a diverse blend of high quality individuals bringing a mix of experience, skills and backgrounds to the table.
Linking directly to the Scottish government’s concerns for equality and citizenship, as well as being strongly aligned to the University’s strategy and academic themes, we have developed an exciting project around board diversity.
We hope to develop a range of flexible short and long tailored courses for a variety of targeted groups. Initial markets of young professionals, women and entrepreneurs have been identified, and there are opportunities to target ethnic minorities, LGBT and individuals with disabilities to increase the potential for greater diversity in board constitution.
We will design the courses to develop an individual’s personal and professional capabilities and, critically, ensure access to companies and organisations seeking new board members at both non-executive and executive level. We will improve governance and diversify the structure of boards in the UK and beyond.
This project will provide an accredited programme. This programme will start with a six-month postgraduate certificate, followed by a six-month postgraduate diploma, and a final six months leading to a Masters Degree.
